 Sharpeville Massacre Pawa Point.ppt

Sharpeville Massacre

The Sharpeville Massacre was when about 20,000 people flocked to their local police stations and demanded to be arrested. The Pan-African Congress suggested this act as a peaceful form of revolt against the passbook law. At first things were fairly quiet. The police hid behind a 4-ft wire fence. Reinforcements arrived, jets attempted to scatter the crowd. However, they responded by throwing rocks. The violence immediately escalated, thus the massacre. Police murdered indiscriminately, men, women and children fell. The screams of the dying rent the air. Hundreds lay dead, most of them shot in the back as they tried in vain to flee to the on-coming shower of bullets. In two minutes, it was over. One policeman, horrified by the results of their actions, vomited at the sight. However, their commander was quoted at saying, "My car was struck by a stone. If they do these things they must learn their lesson- the hard way."
